Wine: Volta di Bertinga IGT Vintage: 2016 Production Area: Gaiole in Chianti Vineyard/Plot: Bertinga / parcel nr.10 Grapes: 100% Merlot Alcohol content: 14% Acidity 6.41 g/L | Acidity vol. 0.41 g/l | PH 3.18 Soil The origin of the Bertinga soil dates back to the Eocene (50 thousand years ago). Sedimentary rocks, mainly calcareous-clayey marl called Alberese. Medium depth soil.
The characteristics of the soil, the low PH and the northern exposure of parcel nr10, called “Volta di Bertinga”, make it perfect for an early variety like Merlot which here excels by combining incredible freshness and depth with power and longevity Vintage 2016 The profile of the 2016 vintage was regular, without recording any health problems in the vineyard. The low rainfall at the end of July at the time of veraison was compensated by the rains at the end of August and the beginning of September.
The balance was also supported by the constant heat, without excessive peaks in the last month, which helped the ripening of the grapes, without over-ripening phenomena.
The summer was excellent overall, characterized by little rainfall and high temperatures in the months of July and August, but above all by a marked night-time temperature range, such as to predict wines with high aromatic profiles and excellent acidity.
Vinification / Aging: The harvest was done by hand in 10Kg boxes and the bunches were selected by hand on a sorting table.
The fermentation took place in steel vats. The aging took place in French oak barriques, 30% of which were new, for a duration of about 18 months followed by at least the same number of months in the bottle before being released for sale.
