Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
The village of Castelgiocondo overlooks the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino: an ancient fortress built in
1100 to defend the road that led to Siena from the sea. The property is one of the first 4 to start the production of Brunello di
Montalcino in 1800, and its historical importance is represented on the Castelgiocondo label by the figure of the acondottiere
from a celebrated fresco by the Sienese artist Simone Martini.
The artist's depiction shows Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of the Sienese troops who in 1323 led the attack on the
Montemassi castle; a historical moment which coincided with the secular initiation of the Frescobaldi family
adventure in the world of wine.
Climate trend
Winter 2017 was quite mild, with slightly above average temperatures. Summer and spring saw high temperatures
and low rainfall. The combination of the clay-rich soils and particularly dry growing season resulted in decent growth and
excellent subsequent maturation. At the harvest the grapes were healthy, intact and well concentrated. The
abundant light and heat in 2017 gave the CastelGiocondo wines an extraordinary strength and richness.
Vinification and ageing
The great care of the vineyard, combined with the typical characteristics of this unmistakable terroir, have led to a
bumper crop. The Sangiovese grapes were harvested by hand and carefully selected after arriving in the cellar.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with frequent pumping over, especially during
the early stages. The wine was then aged in wooden containers, where it was able to mature and develop balance. 5 years
after harvesting the grapes, and only after another period of aging in the bottle, CastelGiocondo Brunello is ready to be
be placed on the market.
