A wine very dear to Petrolo, wanted by Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust in 1988 and created then with the help of Giulio Gambelli. The Torrione represents Petrolo's turning point in production: the aim of making wines in the extreme pursuit of quality.
Torrione is Petrolo's "chateau", it is the assembly of the grapes from all the vineyards: not only the Sangiovese from Bòggina but also from other historic company vineyards, as well as the Merlot from Galatrona and the Cabernet Sauvignon from Campo Lusso. A perfect example of a balanced, clear and deep red. A wine that tells, better than any other, the true identity of the territory.

The Sangiovese del Torrione comes from the company's historic vineyards from the 1970s and from more recent vineyards planted according to a very scrupulous zoning which led to the choice of the most suitable rootstocks and the optimal quantity of vines per hectare. The yield per plant is considerably limited (max 1kg per vine) to guarantee the concentration of all the noble components of the grape, fundamental for the characteristics of great structure, elegance and balance that we want to achieve.
Winemaking
Natural vinification with native yeasts in vitrified concrete tanks. Frequent but delicate manual pumping over.
Maturation
Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wood. Maturation in cement tanks, 40 hl barrels, tonneaux and French oak barriques for approximately 15/18 months.
Sangiovese del Torrione – Vineyards
Bòggina
The company's historic vineyard which was planted in 1947 by Gastone Bazzocchi, grandfather of the current owners. Always the main vineyard and heart of the Torrione, since 2006 a growing portion of the vineyard has been destined for the production of the Sangiovese "Grand Cru" of the same name: Bòggina. Over the years the vineyard has been replanted in sectors according to a mass selection to maintain the original historical clones.
Casariccio
The vineyard is located above a beautiful lake and extends for 2 hectares of Sangiovese, with a planting that dates back to the early 1990s. Torrione is obtained from the production of Casariccio.
Lecceta
One of the company's oldest vineyards, with over 45 years of history. Some of the plants may date back to the pre-phylloxera period. It is entirely planted in Sangiovese and produces for the Torrione.
Asylum
Also intended for the production of Torrione, it extends for approximately 2 hectares and is entirely planted with Sangiovese.
Campaccio
This vineyard in a suggestive position surrounded by woods, extends for 1 ha and is located near the Galatrona Tower. Planted in Sangiovese, it is intended for the production of Torrione.
