The vintage opens with the evocative winter panorama of the Forte farm, and begins without significant density.
Everything is bare.
The vines play with the suit of sticks; masters who invite intuition.
The cards are like gems, naked and raw, which will reveal themselves under the care of time.
Little by little we will see the buds in the guise of their cottony appearance, which represents the omen of the green work of the first steps of spring.
Winter has nothing to report to the visible world, it carries with it, in its womb, the maximum confidentiality of future secrets.
Everything runs smoothly like oil that soothes and reduces the demanding winter fatigue, of which the cold season, as a rule, leads.
The only note worth mentioning is the average temperatures.
The thermometer degrees, this winter, have values constantly higher than the standard.
By following the story of this vintage you will discover the details that underline the difference rather than, as they say, making the difference.
The 2019 underline has been given a name: density.
The landscape around us, little by little, changes color and the plants increase the density of their foliage thanks to the first leaves.
The plantations are beginning to express their vital richness and energetic power, deeply immersed in a sinuous and harmonious dance between the rows of vines that surprise even those stingy with emotions.
This year, unlike last year, the shoots are late rather than early.
The delay in "budding" was caused by a persistently cold spring.
Also in this case we have witnessed an inversion of natural rhythms and timbres: the winter warmer than usual and the spring colder than usual.
These are the ingredients and doses proposed by nature for this vintage's viticultural recipe.
We, the men of the vineyards, have learned to manage and optimize the recipe in favor of the best harvest, keeping faith with our original vinosophy.
By reading all the years you will understand, like us, that the unusual usually happens.
Spring is upon us and is characterized not only by the cold, but also by a series of rain showers of the right density, which allow two very useful phenomena:
the creation of substantial water reserves, which are the natural well for watering the plants during the hot summer.
the thickening of the vegetation, which if properly cared for, allows for a balanced density of the leaves which is both pleasant to the eye and conducive to order, a friend of discipline which is the basis of every quality on the farm.
The main motto of the charter of values of the founder of our cellar is in fact eloquent: "order and cleanliness are the basis of all quality".
This motto becomes a decisive aspect for the health of the vineyards because it creates the best conditions for the breathing and development of the plants and, no less importantly, it allows respect for the beauty of the microcosm of which we are custodians.
On 26 and 27 April there was a positive event produced by the pouring of the Sangiovese bunches (reduction of inflorescences) caused by the cold temperatures during the nights which blocked the differentiation of some floral buttons.
Thanks to this phenomenon, sparse bunches are spontaneously generated which enjoy better ventilation, providing more health.
The reduction of the berries per bunch allows for a greater concentration of the noble ripening compounds, favoring the quality of the Sangiovese.
In the central months of the vintage we witness, as always, the silent flowering in the evolution of the vital stages of the vines.
We are faced with the awakening of the strength and power of universal energy.
Flowering, as mentioned above, in the first stage shows itself with separate floral buds, moving almost immediately to flowering expressed by the first colours.
The flowers follow the laws of fertilization until they give rise to the berry, which in this stage are called "attachments".
The god Bacchus, ruler of wine, begins to make the primordial signs of his fruit visible.
This stage is very important because not all flowers set.
The fruit set rate indicates the percentage, different year by year, of flowers that do not complete this stage of the phenological process.
The rate varies from 25% to 50% depending on the season.
The image of this phenomenon is simplified with the fall of flowers and berries in the early stages of growth.
How can we fail to remember a biblical passage from the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel: "The fathers ate sour grapes and the children's teeth were set on edge".
A reference to the fact that the guardians of the mouth should never utter bad words.
Teeth are like trunks that have roots in their parents.
For this reason we should give our children healthy teeth because otherwise they will have them attached due to the lack of maturation of their fathers.
