It comes from the same vines, under the same sky, from the same philosophy. Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a second proud wine,
it has the gift of anticipating the character of the vintage of the estate’s flagship wine and, at the same time, of offering its
own point of view. The joy of its sip evolves over time, adding the charm of maturity to the energy of youth.
TASTING NOTES
65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc Alc.: 14.5% vol.
Despite the sunny character of the vintage, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2022 expresses great elegance and
freshness. The wine has a very intense purple red color and on the nose it releases aromas of ripe black
fruit, spices and lightly toasted wood.
The mouth opens with a succulent, full attack and then continues on a rich tannic texture with a beautiful density.
The finish is fragrant, soft and very persistent. The wine is immediately enjoyable but can reach
perfect maturity in ten years.
THE CLIMATE OF 2022
The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by a rather classic winter with temperatures close to
the seasonal averages, followed by a rather cool and dry start to spring. These climatic conditions
induced a later budding of the vines compared to the dates usually recorded. Subsequently, from
the month of May onwards, a long period of heat and drought, of about 75 days, remained in our region
putting the development cycle of the vineyard to the test. The plants suffered significant water stress during
the growth, flowering and veraison phases, generating a vintage with low production loads.
Fortunately, following these complications, the rainfall due to the characteristic summer storms
unblocked the situation, reactivating the physiology of the vines which were able to resume the maturation
process of the grapes. The latter unfolded during a September ideal for the accumulation of sugars, aromas and
tannins, thanks above all to the coolness of the night temperatures.
The harvest therefore took place in very good conditions, allowing us to choose the ideal harvest date for
each vineyard and vine.
The harvest of the reds began on August 25 with the Merlot, continuing in September with the Cabernet Sauvignon,
and ending on October 10.
VINIFICATION AND REFINING
The harvest was done by hand in 15 kg boxes and the bunches were selected on a double sorting table
before and after destemming and finally subjected to a soft pressing. Since 2016, in addition to manual selection,
optical selection has been introduced to further increase the quality of the selection. Each variety and each parcel
was vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation took place partly in stainless steel vats and partly in
concrete vats, at temperatures between 22-28°C for two weeks, followed by maceration for about 10-15
days. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel vats, after which the wines were transferred to
barriques (25% new and 75% second passage). The wine remained in barriques in the Ornellaia cellar at a
controlled temperature for a period of about 15 months. After the first 12 months, the wine was assembled and
then reintroduced into the barriques where it spent another 3 months. The wine remains in the bottle for six months before
being introduced to the market.
