Tenuta di Trinoro is not the result of a pre-established recipe, but of the inspiration and intuition of its producer. This super-Tuscan wine best interprets the characteristics of its Bordeaux vines and the particular terroir present in this remote corner of Tuscany. Andrea Franchetti's unique style is evident in each of his vintages. Richness, concentration, depth and complexity are the cornerstones of this style.
THE STORY OF THE YEAR AND THE VINEYARDS
The initially short winter, which ended with heavy snowfall in February, returned in April, when our plants had already begun their journey towards the harvest.
From 7 to 9 April the night temperatures dropped below zero and we covered the vineyards with 4000 anti-frost candles, creating an unfortunately necessary evocative show.
The record heat and the absence of rain in the following months pushed the plants to draw from the deeper layers of the root system. We watered and carried out significant thinning to lighten the plants and give them the opportunity to complete ripening on a few bunches. We pruned little, so that the leaves and shoots protected the bunches from sunburn.
On September 17th the long-awaited water arrived which revitalized everything, momentarily lowered the temperatures and exploded the aroma of the Merlot. From the 21st to the 24th we took advantage of the cooler hours of the day to harvest it. It had sparse, light bunches with fiery red stems. We then waited for the Cabernet Franc while the temperatures rose again. When Autumn arrived with repeated rains from 4 to 7 October we harvested the Cabernet Franc. Small intact bunches with skin thickened by the beating sun and generous pulp. From 16 to 21 October we continued with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The yield in each vineyard was extremely low.
The vineyards of Tenuta di Trinoro are located at an altitude ranging from 450 to 600 meters above sea level and have now reached 29 years of age. They have a density of 10,000 plants per hectare.
Each harvest meticulously recounts the challenges of the year through a radical subdivision of the vineyards. In 2021 we collected 45 separate plots.
WINEMAKING
Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats. Then the wine aged for 8 months in French barriques and for a further 12 months in concrete tanks.
ASSEMBLY
Tasting the 45 batches revealed exceptional parcels of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot lacked the balance necessary for a great wine. The blend that convinced us is made up of 60% Merlot from 5 different parcels and 40% Cabernet Franc from 4 parcels. The Merlot expresses itself with authoritative fullness, driven by a disarming concentration and persistence, while the Cabernet Franc gives crunchiness and length to the drink.
8590 bottles were bottled during the waning moon of May 2023.
