CLIMATE AND VINTAGE
After a mild and rainy winter, March saw a temporary drop in temperatures with some
night below 0°C right at the start of bud break in the last week of the month. The shoots have just opened
They were, however, still protected by the cottony tissue of the gem, which prevented damage from frost. The rest
of spring saw generally warm weather with normal rainfall, ensuring regular
vegetative development until flowering which occurred between 20 and 25 May. In June a rainy passage of
great intensity towards the middle of the month was followed by a very long period of drought with substantial
no rain and scorching temperatures until the end of August. The veraison took place in a homogeneous manner and
fast between July 20th and 25th, starting the ripening of the grapes under a blazing sun. It's a beautiful August
arrival of the rains which led to a notable drop in temperatures, with low temperatures at night
even up to 13°C, ideal conditions to complete the maturation of Merlot. Their harvest occurred early
and quickly to preserve its freshness as much as possible and just in time to avoid a sudden wave
of heat for a week, where the thermometer reached 37 degrees. The Merlot harvest was
completed on September 14th, followed almost immediately by the Cabernet Franc harvest, to conclude the
harvest on September 16th.
VINIFICATION AND AGING
The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg boxes. After destemming and light pressing, the grapes are
was transferred into concrete tanks by gravity, without any pumping. Every single parcel of the vineyard has been
vinified separately. The fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at around temperature
at 25-28°C, with two or three pumping overs per day and délestages where necessary. Total time in the tanks ranged from
21 to 28 days. The malolactic fermentation took place in barriques, 100% new oak, maintaining the
various separate batches for the first 12 months of refinement. Next, the wines were blended and put back again
once in barrique for another year, for a total of 24 months. After being bottled, Masseto 2020
it was left to refine for another 12 months in the bottle before being placed on the market.
TASTING NOTE
Masseto 2020 is a wine that has welcomed all the salient features of the vintage. In fact, it brings excellent sight and nose
concentration both in terms of color and scents. The latter remain persistent and vivid in the glass
without sagging over time. When tasted, the power of this wine returns and expresses itself with beautiful length
and balsamic. The integrity of the tannin reveals the typical aging potential of Masseto.
