Château Petrus is a monument of world oenology and boasts a record in the entire Bordeaux area: that of prices. As a rule, Petrus leaves the cellar at prices that other producers cannot afford to charge, and prices normally appreciate further over time. Despite this it does not have a very long history behind it. The Petrus estate only took shape in 1920, when Madame Loubat inherited land in Pomerol, an area at the time considered second class for viticulture.
However, the great potential of Château Petrus wines was immediately evident, to the point that in 1964, the famous wine shop Jean Pierre Moueix became co-owner of the cellar. The secret of the quality of Petrus lies in the union between a unique terroir and the perfectionism applied to every single production step. In July, a drastic green pruning, to say the least, significantly reduces the quantity of grapes while favoring quality.
Furthermore, for the harvest, a squadron of almost two hundred people is hired, so as to reduce the time needed to harvest the grapes from the 12 hectares of vineyards to just one afternoon. Even in the cellar, precision and meticulousness are de rigueur. If we add to this the great commercial ability of the Moueix family, who has the merit of having made this wine known throughout the world, making it a star of the wine market, the recipe is complete.
As a rule, Petrus is produced with merlot grapes vinified in purity, but when the weather allows perfect maturation of the cabernet franc, a small percentage of this variety is also added. This is how season after season, every year a page is promptly added to the great book of international oenology.
