An iconic Grand Cru Classé from Margaux, seductive in its elegance and structure.
The property
With origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is one of those Grands Crus that have built the legend of great Bordeaux wines throughout the world. In 1855, the château obtained the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé and was the only one of the four châteaus presented to have obtained a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the property by André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, Château Margaux wrote a new page in its history. Taking Château Margaux's Grand Vin to the highest levels, she reintroduced the Château's Second Wine, the Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, which had been started in 1908. Following in her father's footsteps due to his untimely death, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took over the family flag with energy and passion to maintain the rank of Château Margaux, which has become a Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognizable for its neo-Palladian appearance. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines are among the greatest in the world.
The vineyard
The Château Margaux vineyard owes its particularity to its rare and unique terroir, located on a gravel hill. The estate's grape varieties include the area's signature black grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The clay-limestone soils of the estate give life to legendary vintages, with a stringy and sensual appearance, so representative of the great wines of Margaux.
The vintage
Although the first two months of the year were mild and rainy, a dry and clement March favored the early budding of the vines. Spring began with heavy frosts. Although almost a hectare of white grapes was affected, despite the irrigation systems, the reds were little affected. Subsequently, the high humidity in May and June led to strong mold pressure, which was kept under control thanks to the efforts of the crews. Although flowering occurred under average conditions, fruit set was excellent. A humid July gave way to a particularly dry August and early September. The strong sunshine at the end of September was ideal for refining the maturation of the grapes until the harvest.
