Brunello di Montalcino is definitely one of my favourite Italian DOCGs. Pure expression of Sangiovese from sunny village of Montalcino, usually aged in big oak barrels and to not be released earlier than fifth year from the harvest date. Our host, mr Nikolic, gathered 8 Brunellos for us to taste, all blind. Poggio Antico gave two oldest wines, from 2004. vintage, both white label and riserva being rustic in character, eearthy, spicy and full of life. Valdicava 2010. superb as usual, with fine breed of acidity and wilderness unique to their wines. Luce 2015. and Gaja’s Brunello 2015. were both up to their level, strong showing from one of the best vintages in past decade. Best for the last, Tenuta Nuova 2016. and Rennina 2013. My vote goes to Tenuta, as it is a spell binding wine, still young, but fruit driven with lovely herbal touch and elegant structure. Possible 100 points i
